Happy New Year to everyone who celebrates Rosh Hashana! To help your year start off on a sweet note, here is a recipe for my favorite holiday dessert: Apple Plum Crisp. (Well, favorite along with my mother’s honey cake, of course. Hi, Mom!)
The Apple Plum Crisp is very simple to make, can be prepared ahead of time and may be served warm (with ice cream melting over the top) or at room temperature. The autumn Italian plums add some depth to the flavor of the apples, but mostly they are there for the gorgeous color they impart.
I’m using the honey crisp and golden delicious apples I picked this weekend, which makes me feel very farm-to-table hip.
Post script: You are allowed to make this recipe even if it isn’t your new year, and even if you don’t pick your own apples.

great picture. can this be prepared ahead of time and then frozen so that you bake it when you take it out of the freezeer/ ( I do that with apple pie.)
Marge says
Tis absolutely can be made ahead and frozen. Defrost it overnight in the fridge before baking. And if you want, you can make it ahead and freeze it unbaked then bake it the day before you are serving it.

Please be advised that you will need to use margarine if you want to make this parve in the event that a brisket or some other meat is served for Rosh Hashannah.

That’s a great point. I always assume anyone who is kosher will make that adjustment (by rote!), but it is well worth pointing out for the folks who are more strictly kosher at the holidays to accommodate other family members, and for whom it may not be an “automatic” thought. Thanks!.
