We love our pups and we love to cook. So it was only a matter of time…
Like so many things that happen in our kitchen, these were on our mind for a long time. The idea was also on the minds of our friends at MyRecipes.com, who asked us to come up with a bunch of dog treats to share on their website. Yeah, we can do that.
Not only did we have a blast coming up with these, but Jake, Juliette and our beloved four-legged friend Madison loved them too. Seriously, no treat we have ever given them has made them as happy or excited. (Please don’t tell him I told you this, but Jake actually drools for them.)
After we developed all the recipes, we stored them in zip top bags in the freezer. The dogs love them cold, right out of the freezer. You’ll love that you know just what goes into them. And they make great gifts. I would suggest giving them to the parents of your dog friends, not the dogs: dogs have even less self-control than I do when faced with a hunk of oozing stinky cheese, and they’ll eat them all in one sitting. (I know the feeling.)
Here are the flavors we developed– just click on the name of the treat to get our recipe on the MyRecipes.com site. You can use any shape cookie cutter you want, and in any size. (Obviously, big biscuits will need to cook a little longer and smaller ones a bit less. But you knew that.
It’s that time of year, and pumpkin happens to be as good for dogs as it is for humans. What dog could resist these cat-shaped treats?
These are the ones we like to make for gifts: we use whole wheat flour, wheat germ and brewers yeast and flavor it with peanut butter (dogs love peanut butter!)
Chia seeds, wheat germ, a combination of flours and almond butter add up to a wholesome treat for the pups…and we give ’em just a touch of maple syrup to make it extra special.
Every dog needs a little bacon in his or her life. Use uncured bacon to keep it nitrate free, and stick with whole grain flour,. wheat germ, flax seed and other healthy ingredients to keep your dog strong and happy.
This is a much healthier version of those junk-food snacks advertised on TV. We made ours with whole wheat flour (of course), stone ground cornmeal, brewers yeast, nonfat milk and reduced fat cheddar. Our dogs went wild for these!
If I were a dog, this is the treat I’d want– banana, peanut butter and whole oats. Oh, woof!
This post is written with sweet memories of our friends’ dog, Madison the Marvelous, who lived an extraordinary and long life, loving as fully and completely as she was loved.

These seem good enough for people to eat…but what about Kitty and Felix … No cat treats?
