Birthday Present for my Mother

July 26, 2013 By Marge Perry 8 Comments

Dad and Mom and their tranny BFF on my mother's last birthday

Today is my mother’s birthday, but she is no longer here to celebrate. I have a couple of presents for her anyway, and she would really love that.

  • An essay I wrote about my mother in Newsday was named a finalist for the Association of Food Journalists award.
  • A post I wrote about her on this blog was included in an anthology of food writing called Roots, which you can read about here.

I think it is a safe guess that she would feel honored by the recognition and public acknowledgement of the many ways in which she was such a great mother.

* She would love that I am sharing this great photo of her with my Dad and their tranny BFF with you. It was from her 80th birthday, where we all (including grandchildren) had a crazy-fun day-long celebration that culminated with a drag queen dinner show.  The grandkids were a little taken aback, but as you can see, my mother and father had a blast.

    Marge,
Awhile ago I made the cupcakes you and your mom made together, and I bet you are making them today!
I wanted to tell you that today is the Feastday of St. Anne…Mary’s mother. A very special day, indeed! How special to be born on this day.

What beautiful essays, and I just love that picture! I was trying to come up with something special I can make for the kids this weekend and I’m going to give these cupcakes a shot. I’m sure your mother would love these gifts you’ve given her.

More children will have the great pleasure of these cupcakes…thank you! My mother would just love knowing she is helping to put smiles on children’s faces.

I make my living writing, teaching and speaking about food and travel. In the name of work, I (have to!) eat a lot, meet interesting people (many of whom, like me, are passionate about their work) and travel near and far to see where and how food is made, grown or raised. I am saved from a life of extreme obesity by the fact that I truly love to exercise, but I am always one forkful away from not being able to button my jeans. Mine is a sweet and savory life.

I share it with my husband and co-author, David Bonom. Check out our new book, Hero Dinners: Complete One-Pan Meals That Save the Day
